“OCT 16 and 21, 1960: [John F.] Kennedy again attacks Eisenhower’s Cuba policy: ‘If you can’t stand up to [Fidel] Castro, how can you be expected to stand up to [Soviet Union’s First Secretary Nikita] Khrushchev?’ And five days later: ‘We must attempt to strengthen the non-Batista democratic anti-Castro forces in exile, and in Cuba itself, who offer eventual hope of overthrowing Castro. Thus far these fighters for freedom have had virtually no support from our government.’”
